What is a celebration of life?
Every life is unique, and every farewell can be too.
A celebration of life is a personalised gathering that reflects the person being remembered – their personality, passions, values and the memories they leave behind.
There’s no fixed format, no single venue and no script that has to be followed. It can be held in a park, overlooking the harbour, in a function room, at home or somewhere that held special meaning. It can include favourite music, heartfelt stories, shared laughter, personal rituals and quiet moments of reflection.
The loss isn’t overlooked. It’s simply balanced with a celebration of the life that was lived.
Whether you already have a vision in mind or you’re still exploring what feels right, Matt will help you create a farewell that feels authentic, personal and true to the person you’re remembering.
How Matt creates your celebration
Every celebration of life begins with a conversation, and Matt takes as much time as that conversation needs.
He’ll usually spend a couple of hours with you, getting to know the person you’re remembering. Through an unhurried conversation, he’ll learn about their personality, the moments that defined them, the stories that still make you smile, and the memories that deserve to be shared.
From there, Matt writes and delivers a tribute that’s deeply personal and true to who they were. You’re welcome to read it beforehand, although many families choose to experience it for the first time alongside everyone else.
Every celebration is different. Some families ask Matt to lead the entire service. Others invite lots of people to speak, include live music or create a farewell that’s completely their own.
Whatever you have in mind, Matt’s role is to bring it all together—creating a service that flows naturally and celebrates a life well lived.
Where can a celebration of life be held?
A celebration of life can be held almost anywhere. Matt has conducted services on riversides, in parks, on the water and in beautiful chapel settings surrounded by nature. If you have a place in mind, or somewhere that held special meaning, that’s always worth exploring.

Meet Matt
Funeral Director & Celebrant – Sydney
Hi, I’m Matt.
After 20 years in finance, the loss of a dear friend led me to a very different path. Today, I help families create farewells that are honest, personal and true to the people they loved.
A celebration of life is where I feel most at home as a celebrant. Every service is different – and that’s the point. My role is to get to know who your person really was, and to bring that to life in a way that feels genuine, not generic.
If you’d like to talk through what you have in mind, I’m here whenever you’re ready.

Frequently asked
questions
What's the difference between a celebration of life and a funeral?
A funeral typically follows a set structure and may be centred around religious tradition or formal ceremony. A celebration of life is more flexible – it can be held anywhere, follow any format, and is shaped entirely around the person being remembered. That said, there’s no strict definition. Some families blend elements of both.
Does a celebration of life still involve the body or coffin?
It can, but it doesn’t have to. Some families choose to have the coffin present, others prefer to hold the celebration after the cremation has taken place. There’s no right or wrong – it’s entirely your choice and Matt will guide you through the options.
Can we hold it weeks after the person has passed?
Yes. Many families choose to wait — to give time for people to travel, to plan something more considered, or simply because they need space before they’re ready. Matt can help you work out a timeline that feels right.
How long does a celebration of life typically run?
Most run between 45 minutes and two hours, but there’s no rule. It depends entirely on how many people are speaking, what’s included, and what feels right for the family.
Can we include live music, a slideshow or other personal touches?
Absolutely. Live music, photo slideshows, a favourite playlist, readings, poems, rituals, shared meals — all of it is welcome. Matt will help you work out what’s possible at your chosen venue and how to incorporate everything smoothly.
What if family members have different views — some religious, some not?
This comes up more often than people expect. Matt is experienced at creating services that hold space for different beliefs and backgrounds, so everyone feels included without anyone feeling excluded.
Can we scatter ashes at the same time?
Depending on the venue, yes. There are guidelines around where ashes can be scattered in NSW — Matt can talk you through what’s possible at your chosen location.
Do we need a funeral director if we're having a celebration of life?
If your loved one has passed away, yes — someone needs to manage the transfer into care, the death registration and the cremation or burial. Matt handles all of this as both funeral director and celebrant, which means one person manages everything from the first call through to the day itself but if you hold the ceremony after cremation or burial, you are more than welcome to arrange it personally.
