Understanding a Catholic Funeral

A Catholic funeral is a meaningful expression of faith, remembrance and hope. While every parish has its own customs, the service is usually celebrated in three stages.

The Vigil

A time for family and friends to gather in prayer and remembrance, often including the Rosary and reflections.

The Funeral Mass

The central part of the funeral, celebrated in the parish church with prayers, Scripture and Holy Communion.

The Committal

The final prayers at the cemetery or crematorium as family and friends gather for a final farewell.

We’ll guide you through every step and work closely with your parish to ensure everything is arranged respectfully and in keeping with Catholic tradition.

Working With Your Parish

Raised in a Sydney Catholic family and educated in Catholic schools, Matt has a lifelong connection to the Church – including a pilgrimage to Rome and the Holy Land that deepened his appreciation for its traditions and liturgy.

We’ll liaise with your parish, coordinate the Funeral Mass and guide you through every step with care and respect.

Every family is different. If you’re unsure about anything or your circumstances feel a little more complex, it’s always worth a conversation. We’ll listen, answer your questions and help you find the best way forward.

Frequently asked
questions

Yes. The Catholic Church permits cremation, provided it is not chosen for reasons contrary to Christian doctrine. The cremated remains should be treated with the same respect as the body and are typically interred in a cemetery or columbarium rather than scattered or kept at home. Matt can guide you through the Church’s position and what’s possible for your family.

A Funeral Mass is celebrated in a Catholic church, but not all Catholic funerals include a Mass. A graveside or crematorium service with Catholic prayers and readings is a valid option, particularly where a church service isn’t possible or preferred.

Yes. A family eulogy is a meaningful part of the Funeral Mass and something Matt coordinates carefully with your priest. He can help your family prepare and structure the tribute so it sits naturally within the service.

The Vigil is usually held the evening before the funeral, at the church or sometimes the funeral home. It includes prayers, the Rosary, and an opportunity for family and friends to gather informally. It can be a quiet, intimate occasion or open to the wider community — whatever feels right for your family.

Within the framework of the Mass there is room for personalisation. Families often choose meaningful hymns, select Scripture readings, and incorporate a photo tribute. Matt will work with your priest to confirm what’s appropriate so nothing comes as a surprise on the day.

This is more common than many families realise. Matt has experience coordinating with parishes to find respectful solutions for families in complex circumstances. It’s always worth a conversation — there is often more flexibility than families expect.

Once you contact us, we’ll liaise with your parish office directly. You don’t need to coordinate between the funeral home and the church yourself — we handle that on your behalf.

Yes. If your family doesn’t have an existing parish connection, Matt can help you find a local Catholic church and make the necessary introductions. For families who prefer a graveside service, we can also arrange for a priest to officiate at the cemetery.
