Understanding a Catholic Funeral
A Catholic funeral is a meaningful expression of faith, remembrance and hope. While every parish has its own customs, the service is usually celebrated in three stages.
The Vigil
A time for family and friends to gather in prayer and remembrance, often including the Rosary and reflections.
The Funeral Mass
The central part of the funeral, celebrated in the parish church with prayers, Scripture and Holy Communion.
The Committal
The final prayers at the cemetery or crematorium as family and friends gather for a final farewell.
We’ll guide you through every step and work closely with your parish to ensure everything is arranged respectfully and in keeping with Catholic tradition.
Working With Your Parish
Raised in a Sydney Catholic family and educated in Catholic schools, Matt has a lifelong connection to the Church – including a pilgrimage to Rome and the Holy Land that deepened his appreciation for its traditions and liturgy.
We’ll liaise with your parish, coordinate the Funeral Mass and guide you through every step with care and respect.
Every family is different. If you’re unsure about anything or your circumstances feel a little more complex, it’s always worth a conversation. We’ll listen, answer your questions and help you find the best way forward.

When my father passed we wanted to find an independent, family run operation. We could not have found better than Matt at Idyllic. From the very first contact Matt was caring, calming and kind. He guided us through the process from start to finish, performed a magnificent job on the day, and was available for whatever we needed throughout the process. I could not recommend him more highly for those looking for someone who cares deeply about the families he helps navigate this difficult time.Posted on Google![]()

From the moment we engaged with Matt he was calm, comforting and considerate, at such a horrific and confusing time. He supported me and my family after the passing of my husband and made the whole process smooth, manageable and quite beautiful. He was thoughtful throughout and always engaged. After such a tragic loss I was stressed and foggy - he came and sat with us, he listened to our story our situation and met me where I was at. The whole process felt professional yet extremely personal. I will be forever grateful to him and the team for making Mikes send off so beautiful and exactly as he would have liked it. He offered guidance and support throughout the whole process and was always available for questions, updates, or a few words of advice. Deciding on who will help you make those final goodbyes to a loved one is an impossible decision, especially when you're feeling at your worst. Those people stick with you. So thank you Matt, more than I can properly put into words, the impact you make during these moments is immeasurable and won't ever be forgotten.Posted on Google![]()

I would like to express my deepest and most heartfelt thanks to Matt Morgan of Idyllic Funerals, for the extraordinary compassion, kindness and care shown to my family following the passing of our beautiful Mum (Julianna) at 97 years of age. From the very first phone call, I knew that I was speaking to someone who genuinely cared. The warmth and empathy in Matt’s voice immediately gave me a sense of comfort at a time when I was feeling overwhelmed with sadness. That first conversation meant more to me than you may ever realise. Losing Mum after 97 years of life was incredibly emotional for our whole family. There were so many decisions to make at a time when my heart was heavy grief, but Matt guided me through everything with such patience, understanding and gentleness. Matt never made me feel rushed or pressured. Instead, Matt took the time to listen to some stories about my beautiful mother, answer any questions and help me make decisions that felt right for Mum and for our family. From the first arrangements, through to the church service and the burial, Matt was there guiding me every step of the way. Everything was handled with such dignity, respect and attention to detail. I felt reassured knowing that Mum was being cared for and that her final farewell was in such compassionate hands. What touched me most was the genuine empathy Matt showed throughout the entire process. He understood that this wasn't simply a funeral to arrange — this was our Mum, someone we had loved for our entire lives, and we were saying goodbye to a very special part of our family. Matt’s kindness allowed me to focus on what really mattered: being together, remembering Mum, sharing our memories and giving her the beautiful farewell she deserved. My family and I will always remember the care and compassion Matt and his team showed us during one of the most difficult times in our lives. Your professionalism was exceptional, but it was Matt’s warmth, humanity and genuine kindness that made such a lasting impression on us, especially me. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for looking after Mum and for looking after us. You helped make an incredibly painful time a little easier, and we will always be grateful for that. Mum was deeply loved, and thanks to you, she was given the beautiful and heartfelt farewell she deserved. Thank youPosted on Google![]()

We had the pleasure of having Matt from Idyllic Funerals organising my father in-law’s funeral just recently. From the very start, Matt was amazing. With just a short turnaround for the funeral, Matt always made himself available to answer any questions we had and nothing we asked was ever a bother for him. He went above and beyond to explore every detail and made the process so stress free for us which gave us precious moments to spend time with family and process the death of a loved one. The day itself went as smoothly as could be with many family friends commenting on the amazing job he did, especially given it was a funeral which involved quite a few Vietnamese cultural traditions blended with some modern touches. We would highly recommend Idyllic Funerals for your funeral services.Posted on Google![]()

Our family is incredibly grateful to Matt and the team at Idyllic Funerals. From the very beginning, Matt was meticulous, compassionate, and exceptionally accommodating. We were navigating a number of challenges, including a very tight turnaround time, language barriers, important cultural traditions, and the emotions that come with losing a loved one so soon. What stood out most was the genuine effort Matt made to understand and respect our cultural traditions. He took the time to listen, learn, and ensure that every detail reflected our family's wishes. His patience, empathy, and professionalism gave us confidence and comfort during an incredibly difficult time. I truly loved working with Matt. He made a stressful and emotional process feel manageable, and I always felt supported and understood. The service itself was absolutely beautiful, thoughtfully planned, and delivered with dignity and care. Most importantly, it was the farewell my dad deserved. We will always be grateful to Matt and the entire Idyllic Funerals team for helping us honour him in such a meaningful way. I would highly recommend Idyllic Funerals to anyone looking for a team that genuinely cares and goes above and beyond for the families they serve. ❤️Posted on Google![]()

Frequently asked
questions
Can a Catholic funeral include cremation?
Yes. The Catholic Church permits cremation, provided it is not chosen for reasons contrary to Christian doctrine. The cremated remains should be treated with the same respect as the body and are typically interred in a cemetery or columbarium rather than scattered or kept at home. Matt can guide you through the Church’s position and what’s possible for your family.
Does the funeral have to be held in a church?
A Funeral Mass is celebrated in a Catholic church, but not all Catholic funerals include a Mass. A graveside or crematorium service with Catholic prayers and readings is a valid option, particularly where a church service isn’t possible or preferred.
Can family members deliver a eulogy during the Mass?
Yes. A family eulogy is a meaningful part of the Funeral Mass and something Matt coordinates carefully with your priest. He can help your family prepare and structure the tribute so it sits naturally within the service.
What happens at the Vigil?
The Vigil is usually held the evening before the funeral, at the church or sometimes the funeral home. It includes prayers, the Rosary, and an opportunity for family and friends to gather informally. It can be a quiet, intimate occasion or open to the wider community — whatever feels right for your family.
Can we include personal music and readings?
Within the framework of the Mass there is room for personalisation. Families often choose meaningful hymns, select Scripture readings, and incorporate a photo tribute. Matt will work with your priest to confirm what’s appropriate so nothing comes as a surprise on the day.
What if our family member wasn't a practising Catholic?
This is more common than many families realise. Matt has experience coordinating with parishes to find respectful solutions for families in complex circumstances. It’s always worth a conversation — there is often more flexibility than families expect.
How do we let the parish know someone has passed?
Once you contact us, we’ll liaise with your parish office directly. You don’t need to coordinate between the funeral home and the church yourself — we handle that on your behalf.
Can you help if we don't have a parish?
Yes. If your family doesn’t have an existing parish connection, Matt can help you find a local Catholic church and make the necessary introductions. For families who prefer a graveside service, we can also arrange for a priest to officiate at the cemetery.
Not sure where to start? Call us on 0449 729 254 – we’ll help you find the right path forward.
